Buying mattresses & bedding: what to look for

Firm, flat and waterproof

The Lullaby Trust advises a firm, flat mattress with a waterproof cover, in good condition.

The right size

Match the mattress to the cot. It should fit snugly with no gaps where a baby could get stuck.

Keep it simple

Fitted sheets and cellular blankets, firmly tucked in, or a baby sleeping bag. No pillows, quilts or bumpers.

Nursery checklist

How many cot sheets do we need?

Three or four fitted sheets is a good start, so there’s always a clean one ready after a leaky night.

Can we reuse a mattress from an older child?

The Lullaby Trust recommends a new mattress for each baby if you can. If you do reuse one, it should be firm, flat, dry and in good condition.
