Buying sleeping bags & swaddles: what to look for

TOG ratings

Lower TOGs (0.5–1) are for warm rooms; 2.5 TOG suits most UK nurseries kept at 16–20°C; 3.5 TOG is for cold rooms.

The right size

It should fit well around the neck and arms so baby can’t slip down inside the bag.

Swaddling safely

Swaddle only to the shoulders, keep hips free to bend, and stop as soon as baby shows signs of rolling.

What TOG sleeping bag do we need?

For a room at 16–20°C, a 2.5 TOG bag is the usual choice. In summer heat, go down to 1 TOG or 0.5 TOG.

When can baby use a sleeping bag?

Most come in newborn sizes, usually from around 4 kg. Check the minimum weight on the bag.
